Supplements and ADHD

Dietary supplements and ADHD have been studied extensively over the last decade to understand the efficacy of dietary supplements for improving the symptoms of ADHD. A number of these studies have found strong positive correlation between the use of certain supplements and ADHD improvement. Here are the supplements that have been most successful in providing a positive response in ADHD patients:

Healthy diet & nutrition plan for attention deficit and hyperactivity

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs): In tests conducted at Purdue University and by others, children with ADHD were found to have relatively low levels of EFAs. Among other functions, EFAs are necessary to build cells membranes and the junctions between nerve cells, including millions of nerve cells contained within the human brain. In this role, EFAs directly affect the efficient conduction of messages in our brains. EFAs can be found in a variety of supplement forms, as well as in fish, canola oil, flaxseed oil and dark green leafy vegetables.

Calcium and Magnesium: In tests conducted in Poland and Israel, among others, children with ADHD were found to have reduced levels of magnesium. Calcium and magnesium work together to support the contraction and relaxation of muscles, including the timing and release of neurotransmitters in brain function. Calcium and magnesium can be found in many supplement forms.

Vitamin B Complex: The Vitamin B-complex includes all of the known essential water-soluble vitamins (except for Vitamin C), including thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), biotin, folic acid and the cobalamins (vitamin B12). For the management of ADHD symptoms, the B vitamins work together in the brain for the production of the various neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine and 5-HTP.

Pycnogenol: Pycnogenol is such an important supplement in the area of supplements and ADHD that we have written a separate detailed page covering this supplement in greater detail. Click above to go to the Pycnogenol page.
