Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Tips for Success
Part 1

Here are a number of tips to help you manage the ADHD in your life (your own or your child's) as effectively as possible:

1. Work only with professionals who understand Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and have hands on experience with managing this complex condition.

2. Read as much as you can and become your own expert on ADHD. There's a wealth of great literature at your local library and bookstore and you'll soon understand all of the obvious and more subtle aspects of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

3. Establish a support network. Whether you're the parent of an ADHD child or teen or an ADHD adult yourself, there are many others going through the same experiences as you. You'll be amazed at how your self-esteem rebounds once you realize that you're not the only one struggling against Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

4. Focus on the positive. When you're dealing with ADHD, there is a lot of negative talk about what's going wrong. But ADHD is only a small part of who a person is. Remember other strengths and gifts that make up the whole person.

5. Understand that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a biological state, not a character flaw. ADHD comes from genetics and is the result of your unique neurological make-up.

6. Incorporate tools that give you structure. Use calendars for planning and scheduling, task lists to track actions and priorities, and rituals and reminders to keep daily events flowing smoothly.

7. View each large task as the sum of its intermediate steps. Break large projects down into manageable activities, and then track the individual activities.

8. Optimize your environment for your best performance. Use colors or music, patterns or silence, whatever works best. Work at the office or the library if you like the presence of others or work in a quiet area at home to minimize distractions.

9. Don't over-commit yourself. It takes time to move from one activity to the next and to be adequately prepared for each new activity you've scheduled.

10. Plan for "down-time." Whether we're talking about a child or an adult with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, everyone can focus better after some time to blow off excess energy and relax.
