Treatment Alternatives for ADD and ADHD
Survey of Alternative Treatments (Part 2)
Here's Part 2 of our survey of the most common treatment alternatives for ADD and ADHD:
Nutrition and Diet There have been many clinical studies that have validated the positive relationship between a high-quality nutritious diet and a reduction in the symptoms of ADHD. Perhaps the best known diet for ADHD is the Feingold Diet. Dr. Feingold's research concluded that ADHD symptoms in many people were arising from their consumption of artificial colorings, preservatives and certain naturally-occurring nutrients known as salicyates. By removing these foods from the diet, the ADHD symptoms would disappear. The Feingold Diet has been clinically tested for over 30 years and has continually been shown to yield a 50% to 70% success rate.
Dietary Supplements A number of specific dietary supplements have been studied in recent years and have been found to correlate with significant improvements in ADHD symptoms. These studies have addressed the theory that ADHD symptoms derive from a biochemical imbalance in one or more key nutrients, especially including those nutrients that are responsible for optimal brain functioning. In these studies, when nutritional imbalances were corrected, ADHD symptoms were reduced and/or disappeared completely and were replaced by improved focus, self-control and learning ability.
In conclusion, if you're searching for a way to help yourself or your child with ADD, there are a number of alternatives for ADD treatment that have proven successful for other families. You may want to research each of the methods outlined above in more depth before you choose the method that right for your family.
