ADD and ADHD Alternatives
Survey of Alternative Treatments (Part 1)
In recent years, a number of ADHD alternatives and treatment options have become available for adults and children suffering from ADHD.
Here's a survey of the most commonly discussed alternative treatments for ADHD:
Behavior Modification ADHD adults and children can be taught a number of skills that will help them manage and control their lack of focus and/or high activity level. The behavior modification approach involves the identification of an old behavior to be changed, a description of the desired new behavior, a specific reinforcing reward to be granted for the new behavior, and consistent follow-up to encourage and rewarde the new behavior. Through frequent practice and positive reinforcement, these behaviors will become ingrained in the person to assist them in their day to day activities and decisions.
Biofeedback ADHD patients can learn how to control certain of their own physiological functions, including arousal of the brain's frontal lobe that is known to control attention and focus. For ADHD, the biofeedback session trains the person to recognize when they have stimulated the frontal lobe of their brain. These self-induced stimulations are reinforced with positive feedback and become a matter of habit after the prescribed number of sessions. After several months of this therapy, the results appear to become sustained and many people are able to discontinue or reduce drug therapy they were using.
