ADD/ADHD Overview
As anyone struggling with ADD/ADHD knows, attention deficit disorder is not a simple condition to be easily tested for and diagnosed by a doctor and then instantly fixed with medication or therapy.
In medical terms, Attention Deficit Disorder, with or without hyperactivity, is not a specific disease but, rather, is what doctors call a "syndrome" or a collection of symptoms often found occurring together. And not all sufferers will exhibit all of the characteristics of ADD/ADHD. Some will experience hyperactive behavior while others will feel distracted and out of touch. However, all cases will be marked by a noticeable level of inattention that interferes with normal daily routines of work, school and family.
To further complicate our understanding of attention deficit, there appear to be many different factors that contribute to the existence of ADD/ADHD in a child, teen or adult. Science has founds links between ADD/ADHD and genetic factors, dietary concerns, brain chemistry, and head injuries, as well as to the effects of prenatal exposure to harmful drugs and alcohol.
